Fiesole.....

We have a free day and take off this morning on the city bus for this bedroom community a mere seven kilometers to our north.  Immortalized in both film and literature, Light in the Piazza, A Room with a View, Fiesole is nestled on a mountain top with metropolitan Florence arrayed at its feet.

Simona gave us a check list this morning so after browsing the mercato we ask directions to the Convento di San Francesco and proceed to climb the steepest hill in recent memory.  Quite a hard climb but the panorama at the top is beautiful with the Duomo the centerpiece and the green topped Synagogue prominent.

We visit the convento and the attached church whose walls are hung with vibrant paintings over the side altars.

They are preparing for a christening this morning with the monk donning his simple cream colored vestments and the photographers setting up. Rigmor guessed it was a christening when she spied a fancy baby dress where people were gathered at the foot of this huge hill.  When we come out or the church,  Ecco, La Bambina!  Of course she is being held by the proud Nonna and between Italian and the universal language of grandmothers we learn she is seven months old with six teeth.

She really is a pretty child.  This is where Paolo would normally roll his eyes and make some sort of remark about never seeing a baby monkey that wasn't cute, but she was a stunner.  With skin like latte and eyes the color of blueberries.

The museum is also home to an ethnological collection of Chinese and Etruscan art.  As we slide our way down the hill there is a small leather shop.  Rigmor is still looking for a computer bag but here I find the last of three belts on my list.

We take several more panoramic walks seeing the Roman ruins and then, by mistake, an interesting cemetery.

After some shopping we have a long and leisurely lunch under the tented loggia of a trattoria opposite the square enjoying the people watching and even meeting a brindle boxer with a velvet muzzle named Striga.

With all our trekking Fitbit says we climbed 47 flights of stairs.  We still feel pretty fresh...must be the inspirational views!
